When Should You Put Your Motorcycle Away for the Season?
Anyone who's serious about owning a motorcycle knows two things to be certain: One, you've got to keep your prized ride inside a sturdy, dependable shelter, such as a portable garage or an enclosed carport. Second, in the process of storing it away for the season, you need to fully winterize your vehicle. Otherwise, once spring arrives, you'll be dealing with a slew of maintenance issues right off the bat.
But, even with these factors in mind, when's the right time to put it in storage for the next few months?
By Winter
Are the temperatures getting a bit cool? Do you feel a chill whenever you go for a ride? Because of your vulnerability to the elements and the fact it gets darker earlier, it's not always a good idea to continue riding through the winter season, even if your region doesn't experience significant snow. Rather, by late November, have a plan in place to start winterizing your bike.
Once the Conditions Get Bad
But, if you're up in the Northeast or Midwest, there's a good chance that you know cold weather isn't exclusive to winter. Rather, frost and slick roads are hallmarks of late fall. By winter's official start, instead, you expect to content with snow - and not just a coating.
Such conditions are particularly dangerous for motorcycles. Riders on slippery roads may lose their balance, which in turn increases your chances of getting into an accident. Further, keeping your motorcycle out once snow starts falling ups its chances of rust and other damage.
What to Do
When your portable motorcycle shelter is set up and fully anchored into the ground, make sure you:
- Keep your vehicle away from UV light, which is known to crack, fade, and deteriorate parts.
- Have the oil, other fluids, and filters changed before the bike goes into storage.
- Add fuel stabilizer.
- Lubricate parts, especially if you plan to store the bike for at least six months.
- Remove the battery.
- Wax and polish the surface to avoid rusting.
- Fully inflate the tires.
